Born
in Louisville, Kentucky, Pat moved to Waukegan, Illinois at
an early age. She married George Schumacher of North Chicago
and raised six children there. Pat and George always owned their
own businesses. For 20 years, they had two currency exchanges
in Waukegan. In the 1970s, the Schumachers sold their Illinois
businesses and moved to Farmington, where we owned and managed
a 69-room motel, a restaurant, liquor store, and lounge. In
1984, Pat and George purchased the El Monte Lodge in Taos. They
sold the lodge to Tom Worrell in 1998.
Pat
studied accounting at Northwestern University, and she always
handled the accounting for her and her husband’s businesses.
Their business was the first small business to ever be recognized
by the IRS for a profit-sharing plan. In addition, their two
currency exchanges were licensed by the Banking Division of
the State of Illinois and were audited every year by that agency.
Based on their evaluations of the Schumachers’ currency
exchanges, the auditors recommended that Pat help other currency
exchange owners to set up their books.
Pat
has served on the Holy Cross Hospital Foundation Board for over
a decade. She has served as president of the Foundation, and
in 1996 she was appointed Chairman of the Fall Arts Festival.
Presently, she serves as President of Taos Fall Arts Festival,
Inc.
Pat
has six children, seven grandchildren, and two great granddaughters.
She is retired and lives in Vegas de Taos.
